November Movie Series - the 1st

Thanks to the world-wide web, it is super easy to tell what movies came out on specific days throughout the year (I'm being sarcastic, it was super hard and I had to use four different websites). I thought it would be fun to post what movies came out in past Novembers. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, maybe this series will give you some good ideas for movies to watch with your loved ones. Keep checking back throughout the month for new posts. Enjoy!

P.S. I only included (and will include in future posts) movies I actually liked. So yeah, this is (and will be) a really subjective list of movies.

Murder House Needlepoint Pattern

I've been slowly but surely jumping on the bandwagon and watching FX's American Horror Story. I absolutely LOVED the first season. There is just something so amazing about knowing a house is haunted then eventually becoming one of the haunted. I'm currently in season three and so far I'm loving the witchy vibe. Do you love American Horror Story as well? Check it out, I've got a new pattern for you!

The Magic of ASMR

Okay, I know what I'm about to say won't make much sense, but some people claim to get brain orgasms when listening to certain video and audio recordings. I honestly thought this was nuts until I experienced it firsthand when I was listening to Taylor Swift's song Wildest Dreams in the car super loud. I started feeling this tingly, tickly sensation in the back of my head and around my forehead. I went home and told my husband and he was all like, "Oh yeah, I get those all the time. I listen to ASMR videos every night while I'm falling asleep. Helps me relax." Uhh, okay. I knew the hubs liked to sleep with his headphones in, but I thought he was just listening to music. So on top of discovering this whole side of my husband I never knew about, I learned about the magic of ASMR.

Life's Trivial Pursuits Trivia - Crimson Peak

My husband and I recently went to Texas to visit with family. While there we decided to dump the kids on grandma so we could go check out Guillermo del Toro's new film Crimson Peak. I went in knowing nothing about the film (seriously, I didn't even know it existed until we got to the theater and saw it on the marquee), so I had relatively low/no expectations. In all honesty, I was pleasantly surprised that the movie was an amazing throwback to older horror films like The Shining and was very reminiscent of gothic romance novels like Frankenstein and Dracula. Although the film was two hours long, I really felt like it was properly paced and everything that was in the movie served a purpose. It's not scary, had awesome production value, and was a movie that had ghosts in it rather than being a ghost movie. So if you've got some time this Halloween, definitely go check it out!

Best Audition Videos on YouTube

"Oh, I'll just watch this one video." ... two hours later... "Okay seriously, this is the last video!" ... three hours later ... "Damnit." Yeah, that literally happens every time I open up that soul-sucking-time-consuming black hole that we call YouTube. I had one such moment earlier today and I thought I'd turn my wasted hours into something positive by blogging about it. I spent the bulk of my day watching audition videos because it seriously makes me the happiest person ever when I watch someone just kill it at an audition. I especially love it when everyone thinks the person is going to be super crappy but then they end up being totally amazing (I always tear up at Susan Boyle's audition). Without further ado, here were my favorite audition videos!!

P.S. I'm not sure if it's just on my browser, but all the videos were muted automatically. So sorry. You might have to turn the volume up each time you watch a different movie.

New York Times Best Sellers with 12+ Weeks

New York Times Best Sellers with 12+ Weeks

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that The New York Times puts out a weekly best sellers list. I've always been a little fascinated with this because it seems like every other book claims to be a New York Times Bestseller. So how exactly does a book make the list? Well, that's complicated because The Times has deemed their methods a trade secret. But according to some sources, it involves a complicated formula of wholesale and retail sales with independent book stores weighing in a bit more than big chains like Barnes & Noble. Also, The Times doesn't really keep track of sales on classic literature, which basically means you won't see books like 1984 or The Grapes of Wrath on any current lists.

So why make the formula of the list super-duper top secret? Well, it turns out it's to keep authors and publishers from gaming the system. In fact, The Times puts a little dagger symbol on books that only made the list because of large bulk orders. This is supposed to rat out those authors who buy thousands of copies of their own book to make the list.

The Times currently keeps track of the following categories on a weekly basis:

Honing My Not-So Savvy Writing Skills

I'm not sure who can walk into a Barnes & Noble and leave without having purchased a single item from the clearance tables in the front atriums. When I found this, I thought to myself, "well here's your chance to write more." And by more, I mean at all because other than signing checks, I never pick up a pen. I keep everything either on my phone or computer. Well, that was the old me. The new me has a book with what claims to have a collection of 642 things to write about. I cracked it open, read through a few prompts, and finally stuck on one. This post is the culmination of my late night effort to do something useful before bed. I have copied my little story exactly word-for-word, errors and all for you to enjoy. And let's face it, I'm pretty sure I'm the only follower for this blog, so this is really just for my enjoyment. Without further ado...

The Prince of Tides Quote (Cross Stitch Pattern)

I recently finished reading The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy. His writing is so awesome, that I decided to make a somewhat risque pattern of one of my favorite quotes from the book. Enjoy!

Pursuits to Mimic - Love Birds on Canvas

I painted this beauty for my youngest sister's bedroom. She just moved in with your beau, so I thought the love bird theme was cute. I couldn't find the actual picture that inspired my painting, but I found something close to it on Pintrest. I used acrylic based paints that I bought here.

Life's Trivial Pursuits Trivia - The Prince of Tides

The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy is one of the best pieces of southern fiction I have read in a very long time. I would even go so far as to say that it is leagues better than both The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The Wingo family will forever be with me. There was Amos Wingo, the grandfather who was a one woman for life kind of man, who bore a cross throughout the town of Colleton to much fanfare, and heroically proved to his town that he was not in fact senile because he was able to water ski forty miles from Charleston to Colleton.

Life's Trivial Pursuits Trivia - Stiff

Okay, so it's been a couple of weeks since I finished reading Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach and a lot of what I read is still with me. It was such an informative and interesting read about the use of cadavers for research. I would definitely recommend it if you have an open mind and aren't too squeamish (I would probably skip chapters 9 & 10 if you are). Mary (yeah, we're on a first name basis) also does an awesome job of writing about cadavers without coming off as insensitive or off-putting. A must-read!

Periodic Table of the Elements Cross Stitch Pattern

I've seen periodic table cross stitch patterns before, but none of them do what a periodic table should do - they should be informative and useful when solving chemistry problems. My latest pattern has just about everything you could want in a periodic table. This cross stitch pattern contains...

Up-Cycling Adult Coloring Pages - Bookmarks

I'm pretty much addicted to coloring those fancy new adult color books that seem to be all the rage right now. I probably spent $20 on 4 books at Barnes & Noble and I will get hours upon hours of color therapy in return. Definitely a good bang for my buck! Now on to what I plan to do with all these kick awesome pages I've colored. I have a ton of ideas on how I want to up-cycle my "art", but only so much time to dedicate to coloring and blogging. With this said, this post will be on how I turned a couple of my completed pages into bookmarks. I'll post more ideas throughout the upcoming months.

20 Children's Books that You'll Actually Enjoy Reading

With the advent of e-readers, book stores have become all but obsolete. This makes it incredibly difficult for us parents wanting to nurture a love of books in our young ones. No longer are the days where you can browse the children's book section of Walden Books or Borders. You could actually pick up a book and read it - if it was lame you could put it back and pick something else. Nowadays, you have to buy your books online or from a very limited selection at Walmart. And unless you just love returning items via the mail (which NO ONE does), you run the very likely risk of getting stuck with this soul sucking book that makes you want to pound your fists and cry whenever your kid insists on reading it.

So in an effort to alleviate some of this stress, yours truly spent a good two hours reading through about 100 books (we still fortunately have a Barnes & Noble) and found a good 20 books that will actually be enjoyable for you to read with your littles. That's right, only 20. That's how hard it is to find good children's books! This list is in no particular order and all are mom approved (the mom being me, so yeah, you know they gotta be good books).

Cry Worthy Movie Moments

On a scale of 1 (no emotion whatsoever) to 10 (bawling like a newborn baby), I would rate myself around a 6 on how often movies make me cry. And when I do cry it seems pretty random what type of movie causes my tear ducts to leak all over the place. Anything from cartoon movies to comedies can totally make me lose it, assuming the setting is ripe with feelings. With this said, here are ten movie moments that make me cry every single time. These are not in any particular order, other than this is the order they popped into my brain as being cry worthy.

Photo - Yeah, that's a photo of Ellie dressed as the cowardly lion. She really nailed her role.

Life's Trivial Pursuits Trivia - The Strain Trilogy

My good pal Nichole suggested that I take the theme of my blog one step further and make trivial pursuit cards containing trivia about my current pursuits. What a fantastic idea!! So in honor of my reading The Strain Trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, here is my very FIRST trivia card! Enjoy :)

Well I've decided to pass on my lesson plans to the next generation of teachers who might find these materials good for review or whatever. I absolutely love movies! I am not picky about what I watch. I like just about everything. My standards are low and I'm easily amused. So get ready for the ultimate movie list that I'm sure no one but myself will appreciate (unless you are equally as trashy). Oh and since I like SO many movies, this list includes only those movies that I find really re-watchable. Anytime I see them on TV, I just can't say no.
